Anime Expo 2008

This article was posted yesterday.  Finally looked through it today.  Eh, whatever.  Expected.  Typical fare.  Let me just paste a couple of quotes (hyperlinks not present in original text)...

Otaku is a Japanese word that has evolved from meaning "techno-geek"

But sexually-suggestive and explicit anime like "Gurren Lagann" and "Legend of the Overfiend,"

Because some of the edgier elements such as “Lolicon” (or Lolicom, a combination of “Lolita” and “comic”)

“When you see a kid sitting in Borders reading a manga, he’s not just reading a comic book,” Macias said. “There is something really powerful going on there.”

Obviously, since I'm pointing these out, I mean to say that these are wrong.  The first three points, those are pretty straightforward in their wrongness, yeah.  But what about the last point?  I'd say this Patrick Macias guy's quote (Patrick himself strikes me as a pretty cool guy) isn't quite right either.

Lots of tabs being opened in Firefox these days...

While lots of guys are watching the DSLR manufacturers go at it in preparation for Photokina, Red says it has got a DSLR-killer in the making.  Also, Zepy helps us non-Japanese speaking people know what's going on in this breakdown of eroge production.  Elsewhere, SNK Playmore does more stuff for the fans, and AMD's new ATI Radeon 4670 looks like it'll be a great deal for gamers looking for a <100 USD video card.  And back in the real world, Otakon hotel room blocks are currently sold out.  Insane.

Arcade Infinity

So the other night I went to Arcade Infinity.  I enjoy the place enough.  If it wasn't a :30 to 1:30 drive east on the (often disgustingly clogged) 60 freeway, I'd probably go there more often.

And then I caught myself saying: "Maybe if it had more games..."

But this is Arcade Infinity!  I thought this thing was mecca when I first discovered it years and years ago, when I thought the reason to have a car was to get out of the black hole of gaming that is South Los Angeles, and God was indeed kind and loving for allowing me another chance to play Samurai Shodown: Warrior's Rage.

Despite all the awesome games that it has (including a decently hacked together Street Fighter IV setup with two Toshiba Regza LCD screens), I found myself wishing there was more there.

So I decided to prove to myself that I was being a dumbass.  I went around and listed every single game inside of Arcade Infinity.

Yeah, it's been mentioned before, but now (read: almost a year ago) you (read: car owners in Japan) can have an over-the-top male villain (read: Norio Wakamoto) or a tsundere (read: Rie Kugimiya) in your car to drive you on to victory (read: your destination somewhere in Japan)!  The MAPLUS Portable Navi 2 is the perfect GPS unit for itasha owners everywhere.  It is insane.  Or awesome.  Or scary.  Take your pick...

And actually, there are far more than just those two.  On the MAPLUS2 demo page, you can hear samples from, in order, Tooru Furuya, Hikaru Midorikawa, Eiko Masuyama, Yurika Ochiai, Shuiichi Ikeda, Rie Kugimiya, Norio Wakamoto, and Akio Ootsuka.

It's been years since I've bought anime or game figures... but man, do I REALLY want this Senjou no Valkyria Alicia figure!

Even better than the figure itself is this nifty nugget of knowledge I gleaned from the descriptive text for this item at National Console Support:

"Alicia's in a running gallop and appears to be heading for outright war with a weapon on hand. She also wears a determined demeanor on her face. That usually means war."

Thanks for the heads up!
