Tim Rogers is a genuinely interesting person. He is witty, full of knowledge, and generally good at what he does, which is: communicating the joys and pains of video games to the thousands upon thousands of crazy hardcore and wannabe hardcore video gamers out there. He is also vegetarian, but that’s not why I can’t stand him, and yes: I do find him absolutely insufferable. How can I not when being around him and reading his articles makes me feel that he is incredibly and utterly wrong...

Or maybe that's me who's wrong...

2008 Gyoza Eating Championship

I thought my friend's boyfriend was going to be in a relatively silly and casual gyoza eating championship at the Los Angeles Little Tokyo Nisei Week Japanese Festival. When we got there, my friends and I were stunned to see that he was part of a little amateur side show for a serious(ly insanely awesome) Major League Eating contest.

And yeah: Joey Chestnut was there. More importantly, he totally rocked the rest of the competition (which included awesome old man Rich "The Locust" Lefevre and Miki "the waxer from The 40 Year Old Virgin" Mia) and broke his own 2006 world record by eating 231 gyoza in 10 minutes.

Videos of the contest (including slow motion footage) after the jump...

Bangai-O Spirits is an: awesome game. Why aren't you playing it right now? What? You're waiting for a deal? Seems like now is the time to get it, then...

Fry's ads throughout California (and possibly elsewhere) and the Fry's website show that Bangai-O Spirits for Nintendo DS is now $24.99 USD rather than the usual $30. Which is great if you haven't gotten the game.

I already have the game, which means I'm going to go to Fry's and try to get back my $5 dollars...

Cosplay Videos instead of Photos? PDF Print E-mail

For a long time, people have been talking about the inevitable convergence of still photos and videos in journalism. I wonder what cosplay photographers (ostensibly journalists as they are treated as such at various anime conventions) think of this. Will they trade in their big Nikon and Canon DSLRs to get RED Scarlets? Other places have dealt with this topic many times, so I'm just going to leave you guys with something I grabbed at Otakon 2008 as a quick experiment...

Card Captor Sakura DVDs are Expensive PDF Print E-mail

Want the entire Card Captor Sakura series on DVD? Official US Pioneer/Geneon release? Want to spend between $450 and $800 USD on the whole thing from some dude on ebay?

Well, the closest thing to a deal I've found is from kmart. It doesn't show up in google shopping searches but a quick search on kmart.com reveals that they have the Clow Book DVD box set (the first half of the series) for $100 USD. Not bad. Now if only the Sakura Book set that complements it wasn't so impossible to get...

I really should have bought the whole series 2 years ago, back when Right Stuf was selling it for just under $100 USD thanks to Geneon's expiring license...

Otacracy Lives PDF Print E-mail

Anime Expo 2008I have this habit of collecting domain names.

Some of the lesser ones I've grabbed include tranceanddental.com, almostparadigm.com, and instinctgratification.com. Some of the better ones? Forcedfeedback.com, personalhijinks.com, and my absolute favorite: ApocalypseWow.com. I doubt that I'll be able to top that last one.

Otacracy.com (along with otakracy.com) was a very recent addition to the collection. While the other domain names were born out of pun or humor value (I know, limited as it is), otacracy became its own thing. The name itself got me thinking about the types of web sites, blogs, writings, and journalistic endeavors out there on the web. Especially the stuff from the generation that recently discovered Japanese culture (through anime, games, manga, and music).

And how one becomes a fan. Or: an otaku.
